The Google Summer of Code Internship is a worldwide initiative with the goal of increasing the number of student engineers who will participate in open source software development. During the time that they are not in school, students collaborate with an open-source group on a programming project that lasts for three months.

Take advantage of your summer break by creating code and gaining knowledge about open source software development while earning a stipend! In order to become a member of the open source community, students who are accepted into the program work with a mentor. Many people go on to become open-source developers for life. In the majority of nations, the Google Summer of Code program is available to college students who are at least 18 years old.

The Google Summer of Code program is a worldwide initiative that aims to familiarize students with the process of free and open-source software development. An open source organization provides students with the opportunity to participate in a programming project that lasts for ten weeks during their vacation from a post-secondary academic program.

Since its start in 2005, the program has successfully brought together more than 16,000 student participants and 13,000 mentors from over 118 nations all over the world. A total of more than 38,000,000 lines of code have been written by Google Summer of Code for 715 different open source organizations.

The Google Summer of Code program provides student participants with the opportunity to acquire experience to real-world software development and practices by pairing them with a mentor from one of the participating firms. Students have the chance to earn a stipend while working in fields that are connected to their interests during the break that occurs between the respective semesters of their academic careers.

In turn, the organizations that are participating are able to recognize and recruit fresh developers who are able to add new features and, perhaps, continue to contribute to open source long after the program has been completed. The most essential thing is that more code is being developed and made available for everyone to use and profit from.

This is a work-from-home internship, often known as a remote internship. It is not necessary to travel in order to participate in the program because all of the growth takes place online.

How does Google Summer Internship works?

Students

Students contact the mentor organizations they want to work with and write up a project proposal for the summer. If accepted, students spend a month integrating with their organizations prior to the start of coding. Students then have three months to code, meeting the deadlines agreed upon with their mentors.

Organizations

Open source projects apply to be mentor organizations. Once accepted, organizations discuss possible ideas with students and then decide on the proposals they wish to mentor for the summer. They provide mentors to help guide each student through the program.
